What is Vitis Vinifera ?

Vitis Vinifera is the wild ancestor of most cultivated vines and in particular of the more than 6000 different grape varieties found in the world today. Grape varieties from Vitis vinifera produce good quality grapes for the table and are likely to produce a decent wine.

In Yonne, Chablis wines are made from a single, world-famous grape variety, Chardonnay.

The presence of the Caesar grape variety in the blends of A.O.C Irancy wines gives colorful and full-bodied red wines.

The Sauvignon and Sauvignon Gris grape varieties are used to produce the dry white wines of Saint-Bris, formerly called Sauvignon de Saint-Bris. Pinot gris is used to make gray wines in the Côte Saint-Jacques (Joigny).

Aligoté, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris are the main grape varieties used to produce the red, white and rosé wines of Grand Auxerrois.

Why the name Vitis Vinifera in our accommodation ?

Cravant is an ancient village at the confluence of the Yonne and the Cure and later the Canal du Nivernais. In 1380, Cravant became the first port of Yonne and stored various foodstuffs in the numerous warehouses around the port. It is in fact from there that the wine from the coast of Dijon and Beaune went back to Paris and the king's court. The vines are also present around the village and the wines of the region are thus known on the most beautiful tables in Paris and then in the world.

Our furnished tourist accommodation is an old Burgundian winegrower's house from the 18th century, located within the walls of the medieval village of Cravant, as evidenced in the cellar by the presence of the vats into which the grapes were poured during the harvest.

In addition, our family still cultivates vines in Chablisien today.

We wanted to highlight in this house everything related to vines, grapes and wine. We therefore decided to name the lodge after the Latin name of the plant at the origin of the good wines of our region: Vitis Vinifera.
