The medieval village of Cravant

Vitis Vinifera is located in the heart of the medieval town of Cravant, 18km south-east of Auxerre, 21km from Chablis and 32km from Vézelay in the Yonne department. Its Côte de Palotte contains vast quarries and contains part of the vines of the famous Irancy wine..

The name of Cravant comes from its location at the confluence of the Yonne (formerly Icauna) and the Cure (Quoranda) and later from Nivernais Canal. It comes from the Celtic “Cor” “confluent” and “ban”  “town”, then it is Latinized into Cravannum, then Crevan and finally Cravan to which a “t” was added in the 17th century.

Cravant, the first port of Yonne in the 14th century, enjoys a rich past. Fortifications were built all around the village and determined its current character. Stroll through the streets and alleys of this charming medieval city. You will discover the church of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul, the keep which is the oldest fortified building in the village, the wash houses, the belfry (Tour du Guette or Tour de l'Horloge) is the tallest of the towers of the The fortified enclosure marked by the three ancient gates (Portes de la Poterne, d'Arbaut and d'Orléans), the Wooden House, the Halles, the Town Hall and its library.

The village is part of the Grand Auxerrois vineyard with wines in the Irancy, Bourgogne Aligoté or Crémant de Bourgogne appellations. It is also crossed by the D606 road, the path to Santiago de Compostela (GR® 654) and the Grande Randonnée trail (GR® 13).

Since January 1, 2017, the municipalities, Cravant and Accolay, have become the new municipality of Deux Rivières.
